Built to last The VW GTI ’08 MKV is one of the last GTI’s to feature the 2.0T FSI engine, and one of the last to be built in Wolfsburg, Germany. It is a very reliable engine with no known sources of late-stage failure. There are multiple threads on the Golf MKV forums of this exact model being driven into 200k miles off original engine and transmission. VW GTI owners were lucky in this generation to get the same exact engine in the Audi A4/A6 vehicles. Unlike the Audi A4/A6, the GTI had the option of a DSG automatic transmission. DSG Transmission If you’ve never driven a vehicle DSG transmission, I’d recommend stopping by your local VW dealership and seeing for yourself. It is only found in Porsches and the VW GTI, so there’s a high probability you’ve never driven a vehicle with it. It’s an engineering marvel that shifts in .1 seconds since it has two clutches and was originally designed for the Porsche 911 (they call it PDK). The DSG does not micromanage your shifts. In manual mode, you can paddle shift on 2nd gear in the highway and it’ll stay there. Brief Car Ownership History Enthusiast owned Volkswagen GTI. Second owner, bought it certified Pre-Owned in 2010 @30k. First owner was a VW employee at Countryside VW in Mt. Prospect. Gasoline Only filled with Top Tier premium gasoline for the lifetime of the vehicle Oil Changes History The owners manual states 10k oil changes, I’ve been changing every 5k with only VW approved 502.11 full synthetic oil. Only used Castrol // Mobile. The ’08 VW GTI FSI engine is known consume oil (google it). It’s not a problem as long as you track mileage and top off oil every 300-500 miles. The rate of oil burning increases the harder you drive the vehicle. I’ve been topping off oil since ownership at 30k and always travel with oil in the trunk. Tires I used stock Goodyear tires for most of the vehicles life. Goodyear tires wear down at 20k. Switched to Yokohama at 90k. Yokohamas are rated to last 30k, and so far the current pair is on track for 30k. The tread is at 5/16 right now. Always rotated/rebalanced every 5k. Fun Upgrades Car Audio System: Rebuilt the entire system with a Pioneer headunit, carbon-fiber speakers, and a powered subwoofer. Compatible with all iPhones and Android phones. Subwoofer can be turned off from the headunit, but if you want to have some fun on highway cruises it won’t let you down. APR Stage I Car has been stock its whole life. Got APR Stage I @110k miles to have some fun before sending it off to a new home! Upgraded Brakes If you’re going to go fast, you better be able to brake. Did a complete brake rebuild/upgrade at 80k with drilled/slotted rotors. These are the same types of rotors you’ll find on a stock Mercedes C-Class. The engineering benefit of slotted/drilled rotors is that in wet conditions, the slots/holes can drain water ensuring maximum brake pad contact with the rotors. They also dissipate heat more effectively, allowing for consistent brake performance without fade. Late Stage Care When the vehicle hit 100k, I started doing late-stage car maintenance. This includes using Techron before every oil change, inspecting rubber hoses every 5k, etc. The only rubber hose that needed swapping was a boost hose that was just done @ 112,000. Maintenance Pro-Tips Every engine has its own Achilles heel. For the 2.0T FSI, it is the cam follower. This $20 piece needs to be replaced every 20-30k miles. It is not in the ownership manual as a recommend service item, but honestly it should be. I think there is a leak, I top it off every so often with a $6 can of refrigerant The sub’s audio cable connection got broken when my friend overloaded luggage in the trunk.
